Promoting First Relationships (PFR)

All young children are dependent on their parents or caregivers. The quality of their first relationships is the foundation for their growth and development. In the Promoting First Relationships (PFR) program, parents and caregivers of children birth - five years of age learn how to develop nurturing caregiver-child relationships.

By participating in PFR, parents and caregivers can:

  • Promote the development of trust and security between themselves and their child
  • Support their child’s healthy development of self;
  • Understand the social and emotional needs of his/her young child and ways to meet these needs
  • Read and respond sensitively to their child's nonverbal cues;
  • Understand the feelings and needs behind their child's challenging behaviors;
  • Learn ways to respond to meet the needs of their child and to decrease challenging behavior
  • See the world from their child's viewpoint;
  • Regulate their own emotions; and
  • Promote a mutually enjoyable relationship with their child.
  • Training length: typically 10 - 16 sessions

Promoting First Relationships is a powerful, practical program that not only develops loving, nurturing parent-child relationships,it lays the foundation for the child to succeed in all aspects of their life: socially, emotionally, behaviorally, and cognitively.
