FAMILY SPIRIT PROGRAM

The Family Spirit Program is a nationally recognized, evidence-based home visiting program designed specifically to support Indigenous families during pregnancy and early childhood. Developed by the Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health in collaboration with tribal communities, this program is delivered by trained community-based Health Educators and reflects culturally relevant practices and values.

The core curriculum includes 65 structured lessons starting in pregnancy and continuing through the child’s third birthday, with an extended curriculum available through age five. Lessons focus on enhancing parenting skills and supporting children’s development in key areas such as physical health, cognitive growth, emotional well-being, language, and self-care.

Family Spirit is more than just a parenting program—it’s a trusted support system. It addresses the unique needs of each family, including maternal mental health and access to care, while also helping parents prepare their children for success in school and beyond.

Key goals of the Family Spirit Program include:

  • Strengthening parenting knowledge and confidence
  • Supporting maternal mental and emotional well-being
  • Promoting healthy child development from birth to age three
  • Preparing children for early school success
  • Encouraging regular well-child visits and preventive health care
  • Connecting families to local resources and community support
  • Building life skills for both parents and children that last a lifetime

The program has been implemented and refined over decades and is now offered in communities across the country. We’re proud to bring this valuable resource to the families we serve.
